Hand Milking Goats
We have been using a machine to milk the two goats we take milk from, but today Liz and I decided to hand milk instead. (The machine does a gentler job and it is easier to get all the milk with it, but it is less of an experience.) Of the two we milk one is much harder to hand milk than the other. To milk you hold close the top of the teat then you squeeze down on the rest of it to make the milk in it go down and out into the pan. Then you release and allow milk in the udder to refill the teat, and repeat. Golda's teats are short so it is tough to hold high enough that you get much milk in them to be squeezed out each time. You need to hold up into the bottom of her udder which is not normally recommended. I milked her since I have had more recent milking experience.
